Before declaring a particular major within the field of engineering,
students must meet admission requirements for the degree program. Students may apply to the
College of Engineering upon initial entry to the University by declaring Engineering as
their intended major on their admissions application. When a student is intending to major in engineering
accepted to USF, engineering staff will review the necessary credentials and notify the applicant of his or
her Engineering status.
USF students who wish to change their major to Engineering may apply through
the Office of Engineering Student Services, in the College of Engineering.
To be considered for admission to the College, an applicant must be
accepted by the University as a degree-seeking student and be in good standing
academically.
Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit TOEFL scores to the
University. The minimum TOEFL score must be 550 (paper-based test) or 213
(computer-based test).
Students meeting or exceeding the below criteria are granted direct entry to the College.
Others are classified "Pre-Engineering." Pre-Engineering students are guided by
by advisors in the Engineering Student Services Center as they complete the math, science and
other pre-requisites courses for their chosen engineering major. Pre-Engineering students
are fully admitted to their engineering departments upon the successful completion of pre-requisite
courses with the required grade point averages. Both Engineering and Pre-Engineering
students are encouraged to meet with an Engineering Advisor each semester and to make use of the
tutoring center and other success programs within the College and University.

Once a student has been admitted to the College of Engineering, he/she must
then seek admission into one of the specific departments. Please read all the admission criteria
including the NOTES at the bottom.
For the Chemical and Industrial Engineering
Programs, the
minimum requirements for acceptance are completion of:
- Calculus I, II, & III,
- Physics I & II with labs,
- General Chemistry I with lab
- Minimum "C" grade or better in each course,
"C-" grade is not sufficient
For the Civil and Mechanical Engineering
Programs, the
minimum requirements for acceptance are completion of:
- Calculus I, II, & III,
- Physics I & II with labs,
- General Chemistry I with lab
- Minimum "C" grade or better in each course,
"C-" grade is not sufficient
- and a 2.5 GPA in these courses (best attempt)
For the Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Information System Programs,
the minimum requirements for acceptance are completion of:
- English I & II,
- Physics I & II (with labs),
- and Calculus I & II

Please Note:
Some of the engineering programs may have additional
criteria or continuation requirements that exceed the minimum admission
requirements. In addition to meeting the admission requirements for any
of the engineering programs, all
students must meet all college continuation requirements; a minimum overall
GPA of 2.0 and a minimum USF GPA of 2.0 is required. For further details,
please refer to the undergraduate catalog.
A student can be advised by the department advisor prior to completing requirements
for department admission if he or she so chooses. Prior to being admitted
to the department, a student may be permitted to take no more than two
