Engineering Computing
operates in accordance with a schedule
while school is in session. [NOTE: ENB 116 &
ENC 1000 are designated computer classrooms and
are closed to open use]. All labs will close promptly
at the published time. Users will be advised at
least 10 minutes prior to closing so that they may
send last minute printouts to the printer. Jobs
that have not been printed by the published closing
time may be picked up when the lap opens the next
day. No student will be allowed to stay in the lab
after closing.
Who
may use labs:
Any USF student holding a USF Net ID that has been
validated for the current semester may use the PC
labs [ENB 118/229]. Students without USF Net ID
will not be granted access to the labs.
Lab
assistant help:
Our lab assistants are trained to provide help to
lab users. They are able to help you start applications,
offer help with printing, restarting computers and
applications that are hung up etc. They can provide
general information on Windows and UNIX. Lab assistants
are not trained to debug programs, analyze output,
etc. Please consult your TA or professor for this
type of help.
Computer
Use:
Computers are provided to students to do
bona-fide course work only. They are all configured
to provide a specific suite of application software
that meet the needs of most students. We are not
equipped to support all commercially available software.
Computer games are not allowed on the machines in
any PC lab. Students playing games will be asked
to close the game and leave the lab, please be considerate
of others who need to do college assignments and
adhere to this policy. While using a lab computer,
if you are inactive (not using keyboard or mouse
for more than 35 minutes), the computer will be
automatically rebooted. Any books, papers, etc,
found at the PC will be placed in the lost and found
box.
Food
and drink in labs:
Food and drink items are never allowed in the labs.
Experience has taught us that liquids and crumbs
are not compatible with computer equipment. Lab
assistants have been instructed to deny lab access
to students bringing in these items. Drink containers,
whether empty or sealed, will not be allowed in
the lab. Please cooperate and place these items
in a book bag rather than on tables or on the floor.
Scheduled
classes:
Our labs must be closed from time to time in support
of scheduled classes. We make every effort to keep
at least one of the large PC labs open at all times,
however this not always possible. Labs will be cleared
15 minutes prior to any scheduled class.
Lab
Telephone:
The telephone in the lab is provided primarily for
lab assistants to communicate with the computer
console operator. It is not a courtesy phone. Lab
users are not to receive calls in the labs. A courtesy
phone is provided in the west hallway of ENB and
in the central hallway of ENG for student use.
Configuration
of PC's:
The configuration of PC's in Engineering Computing
labs are strictly controlled. Students are not allowed
to install personal software on the hard drive of
lab machines. In certain circumstances we may install
a users personal software, but the installation
must be authorized, and will be done by department
personnel.
Documentation:
A limited amount of documentation is available in
the lab. Documentation is for lab use only and is
not be taken from the lab. Documentation for most
application programs is available for purchase at
the university
book store or from one of several book
stores in the area. Most application programs have
comprehensive help facilities that serve as application
documentation.
Building
emergencies
In the event
of an emergency, such as a fire alarm, the lab assistant
will clear the lab immediately. Lab users should
pick up any personal belongings, immediately leave
the lab and exit the building. Once the lab has
been cleared, the door will be locked. At the conclusion
of the emergency, users will be allowed to return.
Additional
items not allowed in the labs:
Bicycles, skateboards, mopeds or
other vehicles are not allowed in the labs. Students
with in-line skaters or roller skates must remove
them before entering any computer lab.
